About Sophia

Sophia Roberts-Tara started composing for piano at age 7. She published her first collection of solo piano works, Companion Pieces, at age 10.

Sophia has a love for animals and is inspired by them to compose her music. On her debut EP, Sophia’s compositions were inspired by the furry companions in her life.

With her second compilation, Something Else, Sophia explores new themes of life, love, time and of course, animals.

More recently, Sophia has released single compositions Winter’s Tale and Coming of Age.

In 2018, she has new instrumentals, a cover song, and has been working with producer Mikal Blue on recordings and songwriting.

Sophia mostly works on piano, but also plays clarinet, violin, and has taken up the electric guitar. Stay tuned!

Into the Studio

November 2, 2018

This Summer and Fall, I worked on two new instrumental pieces and a cover song, recording them with Mikal Blue — producer, songwriter, engineer, and mixer best known for his work with Colbie Caillat and Five For Fighting.

I have to admit, my previous recordings were done in a home studio (yes, that meant recording vocals in a closet!).  Sure, recording and mixing on a Mac is cool. But a real studio was something else!

Everyone at Revolver Recordings studio was fantastic.

Playing the Third Street Promenade

The first time my family visited Santa Monica, I was enthralled by the variety of street performers — especially the musicians.

Since then, I have wanted to play live on the Promenade.  Well, this summer, I did it!

What an experience!

First, you need a street performers license. And to get that, I needed my entertainment work permit (as a minor). Then there are all the rules: designated areas, 10-feet from any store or bus stop, forty-feet from any other performer. (I had my dad figure all that out, so I could work on my set.)

There’s a community of regular performers there, and they were all very helpful. Every two hours you have to move to another spot, which means performers scope out the best spots and get in line to grab them. Sometimes this means waiting around for a session to get to play in a good spot. But that’s fine, because we get to watch the other performers. (And eat!)

The people out supporting the performers are wonderful too.

I received a lot of encouragement and was even passed some wonderful notes from listeners — encouraging me to follow my dreams!

Thanks to everyone who listened.

Something Else

Sophia’s second collection, Something Else, includes new piano solos and shows Sophia exploring more artistic range, singing three heartfelt songs she’s composed.

  • Alone (I Found You) is about finding and losing someone special.
  • All Around the World is a lively piece inspired by the joys and surprises of traveling.
  • Clouds is a touching song about the memories of a cherished pet
  • Zoo is inspired by the play of animals from polar bears to butterflies
  • Time reminds us to enjoy the moments of tranquility between the rush of life
  • Deep Love expresses how we all feel sometimes about those we love
